AUSTIN , TEXAS (June 13, 2005) — As our demand for water is growing, so is the concern for the safety of drinking water. At the same time, staffs and budgets are shrinking, making monitoring difficult due to limited resources. To detect and protect against every conceivable parameter becomes an enormous task for operators of water treatment plants. Emerson demonstrates its long-term support of the potable water industry with online analysis and monitoring systems that can be located at strategic points in the distribution system, as well as a broad portfolio of leading-edge control and optimization technologies designed specifically to meet the industry’s complex demands. These automation and analytical solutions will be featured at Emerson’s booth number 2331 at the 2005 AWWA Conference and Exhibition in San Francisco, June 12 – 16, 2005.

"From instrumentation and sensors to asset management and enterprise-wide integration, Emerson is the clear choice for delivering award-winning technology and proven solutions to the water industry,” said Bob Yeager, president of Emerson Process Management’s Power & Water Solutions division . “Our ability to be a single-source provider really sets us apart from other vendors and system integrators serving the water industry.

Integrated Systems
Emerson draws from its broad portfolio – both expert personnel and advanced technologies – to create an integrated system that gives municipalities an unparalleled ability to optimize the business, processes and assets of their drinking water plants. Emerson’s PlantWeb®, a powerful, information-rich digital plant architecture delivers asset management, process control and management execution through intelligent field devices, standards and scalable platforms, and integrated modular software. Throughout the plant, intelligent field devices deliver predictive diagnostic information to AMS™ Suite applications within the Ovation® expert control system.

The Ovation control system optimizes the operations and economics of water and wastewater operations. Some of the largest cities in the country – including Detroit, San Diego and Sacramento – as well as smaller municipalities, rely on Ovation to help ensure cleaner, safer water supplies, reduce environmental hazards and realize significant operational cost savings. Ovation makes it possible to seamlessly integrate information not only at the plant level but also on a district-wide basis, resulting in additional measurable benefits.

Plant operations can be further enhanced by the integration of Emerson’s SmartProcess® plant optimization software into the Ovation control system. SmartProcess advanced control software optimizes control and monitoring of plant processes within operational and regulatory limits, enhancing plant efficiency and decreasing operating costs. By building plant-specific models to simulate process variations and changing conditions, SmartProcess identifies the precise control settings for continuous optimal performance. The plant model incorporates self-learning features that enable it to adapt to long-term changes in the plant.

To help its water and wastewater customers proactively address cyber security issues, Emerson has incorporated security-focused enhancements into the Ovation control system. These include machine authentication and data encryption for the secure transfer of information over common data links, more stringent password management, hardening and streamlining/ formalizing user permissions.

The Ovation systems enhancements and features are just part of Emerson’s ongoing and comprehensive commitment to providing customers with cyber security solutions for today’s ever-changing environment. Emerson also offers information regarding important security announcements, as well as security patch monitoring and notification on its secure Ovation/WDPF Users’ Web site. Other efforts include expanding Emerson’s SureService SM customer support program to include such services as security assessments and audits.

Measurement Solutions
At the device level, Emerson offers on-line analysis systems, instruments and sensors that help plants meet ever-changing requirements, including the Multiparameter Water Quality System introduced last year that now comes with the popular Clarity II online turbidity. The Clarity II enables plants to continuously monitor turbidity levels to ensure the safety and quality of water and meet U.S. EPA and international ISO regulations. Offering a plumb and play™ version for ease of installation, the WQS also offers platforms that range from basic analog output instruments to transmitters with digital outputs powered by solar energy, and utilizing user-specified instruments and sensors. The WQS Water Quality System is a flexible approach offering a variety of options making it customizable to meet each plant’s particular needs. By continuously monitoring several critical water quality measurements online, plant operations can develop a baseline for measurements that indicate normal water conditions. They can then better understand and predict what measurement data is appropriate.

New this year is the FCL i , a pH independent way to monitor free chlorine. This means no pH sensor, for a lower cost of ownership, due to less initial investment and maintenance time for sensor calibration. Other savings inherent with this design are the reagent-free design and low water consumption as the minimum sample size is 1.5 gallons per hour. Not only are savings realized for the reagent, but also no sample conditioning system is required.

"Emerson’s complete line of industry-leading measurement solutions for municipal drinking water plants is backed by decades of real-world, on-line water monitoring experience and award-winning customer support,” said John Wright, vice president of marketing, Emerson Process Management, Rosemount Analytical.

Other analysis systems from Emerson Process Management that are critical to drinking water plants include: turbidity, water distribution monitoring systems, monochloramine, ozone, pH, dissolved oxygen, ORP, conductivity, particle counting and temperature. These measurement solutions enable plants to meet governmental requirements, help ensure water safety and quality, improve plant efficiency and reduce overall costs.

In addition, the complete line of instruments and sensors for drinking water plants offer accuracy, value and ease of use. Based on 60 years of industry expertise, Emerson analyzers and transmitters, including the Models 5081, Xmt, 1055 and 54e, are built with leading-edge technology for Foundation™ fieldbus and HART connectivity, low maintenance requirements for lower total cost of ownership, and backed by a worldwide customer service and support organization. The Model MCL system for measuring free chlorine and monochloramine is a plug-and-plumb, reagent-free system that eliminates the costs of the reagent chemicals and the associated labor and management costs of changing out the reagent bottles and ordering, storing, stocking and disposing of the reagents. The Models 396 and 399 pH/ORP sensors enable plants to determine the level of chemical reactivity and detect changes that impact the effectiveness of disinfection and potential corrosion of the distribution network. The Models 225, 400 and 403 conductivity sensors provide plants with an indication of the total dissolved solids and the susceptibility to scaling. Ozone analyzers and sensors monitor disinfection levels, and the dissolved oxygen analyzers and sensors enable plants to ensure a healthy environment for biological disinfection.

All of these solutions are designed to meet the specific needs of municipal drinking water plants and are currently available for order.
