AUSTIN, TX (June 24, 2003) - Emerson Process Management, an Emerson
business (NYSE: EMR), announced today that it has won a $16 million
contract to modernize the Ataka Thermal Power Station in the Suez
region of Egypt using its PlantWeb® digital plant architecture.
Emerson will serve as the main automation contractor for instrumentation
and control modernization of Ataka's two 150-megawatt units and
two 300-megawatt units that supply power to four million residents.
Emerson's responsibilities include design, installation, commissioning
and start-up of the new control systems.
The power station is owned and operated by the East Delta Electricity
Production Company/Egyptian Electricity Holding Company. The contract
is with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), an
independent federal government agency that supports long-term, equitable
economic growth and advances U.S. foreign policy objectives by supporting
economic growth, agriculture and trade, among other strategies.
"The instrumentation and control upgrade at Ataka will assure
a dependable and adequate supply of energy to the people of the
region as economic development efforts take root and grow in Egypt,"
said Mohamed Mahmoud Ali Hassan, chairman of East Delta Electricity
Production Company. "We are pleased to find a partner in Emerson
who offers a phased, customized approach under the strict compliance
requirements of USAID. The efficiency gains we will realize through
the technology upgrade will directly benefit our four million customers."
Emerson's PlantWeb®, a powerful, information-rich digital plant
architecture, serves as the technology foundation for both asset
optimization and process automation, combining smart field instrumentation
and analytic software with a strong distributed control system to
optimize plant operations. As part of the PlantWeb® architecture
at Ataka, Emerson will install the Ovation® Information &
Control System, as well as HART field devices and AMS predictive
maintenance software, which can increase availability and decrease
maintenance costs. The new system will provide optimum control across
all four units, and the capability to streamline maintenance functions
and perform remote calibration and diagnostics. Emerson's Power
& Water Solutions industry center will coordinate and supervise
the project.
"Emerson's experience in the Middle East and the recognized
capability of PlantWeb® technology allows us to offer a complete
instrumentation and control solution, supported by our unmatched
power industry knowledge," said John Berra, president of Emerson
Process Management. "PlantWeb® with Ovation will provide
secure, stable operation and control for the Ataka facility as Egypt's
demand for electricity grows."
