PITTSBURGH, PA (July 11, 2002) - Emerson Process Management has
been chosen by FISIA/Italimpianti to provide the Westinghouse Ovation®
Information & Control System for a new desalination plant in
the growing industrial city of Ras Laffan in north eastern Qatar
in the Middle East.
FISIA/Italimpianti, the engineering, procurement and construction
contractor for the Ras Laffan Power Company (RLPC) project, chose
Emerson for the desalination plant it is developing, which will
produce 40 million imperial gallons of potable water per day (MIGD).
RLPC consists of AES Corp.; KAHRAMAA, Qatar's electricity and water
distribution organization; Gulf Investment Corporation; and Qatar
Petroleum. The plant will be built on a build-operate-transfer basis.
Under the $1 million (U.S.) contract with FISIA/Italimpianti, Emerson
will supply, configure and install the plant's Ovation System. Ovation
System components for the desalination plant are scheduled to be
delivered to the site in the fall of 2002, with plant operation
scheduled to begin in late 2003. Emerson will also provide a Westinghouse
Ovation System to Enelpower for the 820 MW combined-cycle power
generation plant to be built in tandem with the desalination plant.
"We're looking forward to applying our technological expertise
to this key project in Ras Laffan's expansion," said Ann Pauley,
president of Emerson's Westinghouse Process Control division. "We
feel that our experience will be helpful in providing the water
resources necessary to support the rapid growth of Gulf countries
and in lowering operating and maintenance costs for the Gulf Power
and Water sector as it moves towards privatization."
While the initial contract focuses on primary control for the plant,
Emerson is working with FISIA/Italimpianti and RLPC to improve system
performance by adding the enhanced maintenance and data analysis
capabilities of Emerson's PlantWebÒ digital plant architecture.
FISIA/Italimpianti chose Emerson's Westinghouse Ovation System from
a pool of competing products, including Siemens' Teleperm XP, Foxboro's
Intelligent Automation Series, and an ABB offering based on the
Bailey Infi90 System.
