FGD Optimizer

PLANT PHOTO

The SmartProcess® FGD Optimizer uses a model based on neural networks and fuzzy logic to consider data from the FGD system to enhance and optimize the operating parameters of our customers' flue gas scrubbers.

The FGD Optimizer models the absorption process and analyzes a number of input data, such as:

  • Gas velocity at the inlet
  • Ratio of solid absorption reagent to gypsum in the slurry
  • Chemical concentration of the slurry
  • Inlet temperatures
  • Outlet velocity of the slurry
  • Temperature and concentration of gas

Adaptive Technology

As plant conditions such as slurry flow or pH levels change, the FGD Optimizer automatically adapts. Using its model-based approach, the FGD Optimizer collects data every 10 to 20 seconds and adjusts accordingly to optimize performance.

Reagent Optimization
The reagent in the FGD system, often lime or limestone, makes up a large part of the costs associated with FGD technology. The FGD Optimizer uses the data it collects to determine the exact amount of reagent needed to optimize the plant. In addition, as the FGD Optimizer adjusts performance variables, it also decreases the amount of reagent needed for the process.

According to EPRI, the industry average
savings for a 500-MW plant with 0.5% heat rate improvement equals $200,00 annually.
