There are major differences between the Control Builder tools in different releases of Ovation. Students must enroll in the course that applies to their system. If the plant Ovation system is level 3.1 or higher, the student should enroll in OV200-WIN-3.1.X. If the plant Ovation system is an earlier release, please enroll in OV200-WIN-3.0.X.

Prerequisites
Students must have a good understanding of the Ovation® system architecture
and how database point records are built and maintained in the Ovation Windows-based
system. It is recommended that students attend OV100-WIN prior
to attending this course.
Description
OV200-WIN-3.0.X is designed to provide proficiency in reading Ovation functional control
schemes. Tuning, building and implementing new control
schemes to improve performance are also covered. Both modulating (analog)
and discrete digital control schemes are included in the scope of this course.
Discussions will include the various types of control algorithms available and
how they can be used to create effective control. This course is intended
for people who work with Ovation controllers
to tune and build analog and digital control schemes in a Windows environment.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, using the reference material provided,
the student will be able to:
- Interpret and apply a control functional to the Ovation Windows-based
system
- Interpret and tune implemented control using the available
tools
- Edit existing control schemes
- Demonstrate proficiency in building digital and analog
control
- Design and implement a tracking scheme to meet specific
control requirements
- Recognize the relationship between control schemes
and graphic diagrams
- Implement given control requirements using the Control
Builder
- Evaluate and determine the proper operation of a control
scheme using the tools and methods provided
Course Components
Module 1
- Access real-time functional control diagrams via process diagram subsystem windows
- Interpret the symbology used in the functional control diagrams
- Maneuver through an implemented control strategy from field inputs to indications and field outputs
- Describe the functions of basic logic (digital) and modulating (analog) algorithms used in typical control strategies
- Identify the functions of various I/O symbols used on the functional control diagrams
- Identify algorithms that typically interface with graphic controls
- Use the Control Layer menu with functional diagrams to turn supplemental information on and off
Module 2
- Access the tuning windows for algorithms
- Explain the restrictions that may be imposed by system security settings on the ability to tune a control diagram
- Explain where the physical control process is executed and the impact on plant operations due to various component failures within the Ovation system
- Modify tuning parameters in an operating control diagram
- Describe the purpose of each tuning parameter in the following algorithms:
- SETPOINT
- HIGHMON
- PID
- ONDELAY
- MASTATION
- Explain how tuning changes are saved by the system
- Recognize potential problems that can be encountered when performing tuning operations
- Appreciate best practices for control logic drawings
Module 3
- Open an existing control sheet in the Developer Studio
- Use the zoom functions to view specific areas of a sheet and the view extents to return to full view
- Update database and control files to reflect online tuning changes made to controllers (Reconcile, Audit Sheet)
- Modify existing control sheets using the Control Builder:
- Add or delete sheet inputs and outputs
- Add, modify or delete algorithms
- Add or delete algorithm parameters, point and signal tags
- Move individual algorithms
- Add or delete and move pins
- Add, modify, move or delete notes on a sheet
- Modify the title block data
- Save and implement changes made to control sheets
- Update the real-time functional diagrams displayed in the process diagram windows to properly reflect the changes made to control
Module 4
- Build and implement new control sheets from various types of functional definitions:
- SAMA functional drawings
- ISA functional drawings
- Written or verbal descriptions
- Implement effective logic and modulating control schemes
- Recognize basic tracking concepts and the effects of tracking signals upon various Ovation algorithms
- Implement an effective tracking scheme to accomplish control requirements
- Export and import full and partial control sheets using the library functions
- Consider the need for graphic control interfaces when building new control scheme
Module 5
- Use and understand the various administrative aids provided by the Developer Studio including:
- Edit point security
- Verify signals
- Add, delete, and move pins
- View object and sheet data tables
- Locate algorithms and points
- Delete existing control sheets
- Recognize the impact of algorithm and control sheet execution order
- Modify the execution order of algorithms within a control sheet and of multiple control sheets within a controller
- Describe control interfaces with the Loop Interface Module (LIM)
- Describe pulse accumulator interfaces
